Jason's Visit
Jason was able to take Bosco for a short walk. They actually brought him out to the waiting room. Until now we've been going and sitting on the floor beside his crate area. Bosco tried to shriek his greeting, but still couldn't. But he was sniffing lots. Jason said he was still tired and weak, but seemed to have more of his personality back. And of course, everyone in ICU is in love with him...
He kept his two tbsp of food down (and gobbled it down in true Bosco Style) so if that keeps up he'll be home tomorrow. And then we wait for news from the lab.
Thank you eleventy billion times for all your support. Jason and I truly appreciate hearing how many people love our crazy beagle.

Monday Night Update
The vet called twice today. This morning they switched Bosco's pain meds b/c they think the morphine was making him nauseous. This afternoon they gave him a bit of food and if he can keep it down we might be able to bring him home tomorrow. The vet today said that Bosco is still quiet but he is enjoying going out for his walks. Jason is heading over there now to see him. I didn't go today b/c I had Maddie with me and really didn't think it was a good place for her.
We're still waiting for all of his test results. Hopefully we will hear by Wednesday (they said "midweek" and I feel that is definitely "mid week"). At the moment we actually have no idea what is wrong with him. The thing that keeps sticking in our minds is the fact that Sammy was sick first, then she was better and Bosco was sick. But he just seemed to keep getting sicker.
Hopefully Jason will have some good news when he comes home in a little while.

Madeleine's First Tea Party
On Saturday, Maddie and I were invited to Mrs. Coflin (Sharon)/Ms. Slater(Kelly)/Sarah's for a tea party with Auntie Morgan. It was so much fun. There were, of course, all kinds of special little tea cakes. Sharon set Maddie up with her own table and tea. The tea smelled suspiciously of hot chocolate....
Thank you so much for inviting us. We can't wait for the next party.

Bosco Update:
We left Maddie with Lisa and Jayson this afternoon and went to see Bosco. He was very groggy and tired. He couldn't get out of his kennel this time b/c of the incision. We brought him a blankie and a new stuffie. Again he was so quiet, but he seemed to try to talk to us when we first arrived, but he could have been telling us off for doing all this to him. The vet didn't seem to be able to give us any new information. He said they would call us later in the day tomorrow. We really have no idea when he will be able to come home.
Thank you to everyone who has called and emailed. It means a lot to us.

The vet finally called at 12:30 (after two phone calls from Jason). He said that Bosco is sore but hasn't thrown up since the surgery. He will have to stay in again tonight, but we can come and see him this afternoon. Lisa called this morning to see how Bosco is and offer to take Maddie so we can go to see him. We'll go when Maddie is up from her nap. The vet wasn't able to give any more information, other than they did collect some fecal cultures to test for salmonella.
It is such a dreary windy day here. The tent in the backyard almost blew away. On Thursday it was 32c and today it is 8c. I guess fall is here now.
Bosco, we miss you. The house is too quiet without you. Get well soon.

The surgeon just called.
Good news and bad news. No foreign body. This means we don't really know why he is so sick. His liver, intestines, and one lymph node are swollen. They biopsied all of those and we should know those results by mid week.
Now Jason and I are back to our original fear that the dogs were poisoned. Either by getting into something in our basement or by someone putting something in our yard. I can't imagine that anyone living in my neighborhood would do such a thing, but I have heard of it happening.
So now we wait. The vet is going to call us in the morning.
We are glad we agreed to the surgery, but we wish we had a definitive answer.

As I write this I think that Bosco should be in surgery now. We think he went into surgery around 10pm. We've had a strange week. Sammy was sick earlier in the week and by Thursday she seemed to be better and then Bosco became sick. He stopped eating and couldn't hold down even water. Jason took him to the vet early Friday afternoon and they told him to take Bosco to the U of S animal hospital. He's been there since then.
What's wrong? We don't really know. At 7:30 tonight Jason and I drove into S'toon (Joy babysat for us) to talk with the vet in person. The vet was really great, he met with us right away and spent a lot of time with us. He showed us Bosco's x-rays from yesterday and today. To our understanding, they aren't completely sure what is wrong with Bosco, but they think there might be a partial obstruction (not really surprising, if you know Bosco). His other systems appear healthy (i.e., blood, urine, etc). They let us into the ICU to see Bosco and spend some time with him.
The ICU. We walked into a busy, full room with clinicians working with dogs and cats of all sizes. The vet let Bosco out of his kennel and Bosco didn't say a word. He did wag his tail, so we know he knew it was us. But he was so quiet. That was truly the worst part. He just sat there looking so uncomfortable and miserable. And depressed. They let us sit with him for about 20 minutes. Then the vet came back to see what we had decided to do. After that he brought the surgeon (she reminded me of you, Steph - that made me feel better). They both talked to us for so long and tried to explain all the pros and cons, all the risks. That was so hard to listen too.
I'm kind of rambling. I wish I could write this better. But I really just feel the need to get it down. I don't know what else to do while we wait. The surgeon said she would phone when he was out of surgery, and she said that would be sometime after midnight. I hope she calls soon. I hope they find it and take it out. I hope there are no complications. I hope he comes home to us soon. It's so quiet here. Too quiet.

Setting: Maddie's nap time.
Lying next to her on her crib mattress on the floor
Mistake #1: Lying next to her on her crib mattress on the floor and thinking we both might have a nap too.
"So. I'm the Mommy and you're the Tiny Baby. You need to go to sleep. Want me to pat your back nicely?"
Nicely = thumping on side resulting in three cracked ribs
"Now, I'm the Mommy. Here's the deal at the store: Nice hands and quiet mouth. OK? You want me to pat your back nicely?"
I think I did actually fall asleep for a bit. She didn't.

The Cradle
Maddie loves this car seat. She keeps finding it stashed in the basement and insists that it come upstairs.
I hosted a baby shower for Lara on the weekend. Maddie and I were digging out baby toys for the three babies that were coming. Well, of course they went perfectly with "the cradle". But look closer...you may have a 1983 flashback. Remember the scene from ET when he is hiding in all the stuffed toys in the closet?
Fishing Trip
We went up to Flin Flon on the Labour Day weekend for a surprise birthday party for my dad. His birthday is in October, hence the surprise part.
Dad, Jason, Laurenn, and I went (with The Beags) for a day of fishing. Mom stayed with Maddie (and Charity, the little girl from next door) and Britt had to work (boo). I'm not much for fishing, so my job was Beagle Wrangler and Net Grabber.
About halfway through the day this bald eagle spotted us and started to follow us. He would fly from tree to tree and stay near our boat. At one point somebody (Jason? Laurenn?) caught a small jack and threw it back in. Said eagle, suddenly dove to the water and caught the fish. I have a feeling that bald eagles don't usually have bald mannered beagles around when they are fishing. Sammy and Bosco went burr-zeck (berserk in case you haven't met Treena's Dad) and that eagle actually dropped the fish. True story.

Earning her Wings?
Today was our first flight with all three of us! We headed out to the "airfort" and Maddie was such a good girl and was very brave the entire time. She wore her headset throughout the flight, but didn't talk into the mic. We put her car seat into the back of the Cherokee. There's only one door on that thing - another good reason this Markosky Bunch are the compact size that we are... We flew over Saskatoon, specifically Auntie Lisa's and Auntie Morgan's. We could see Lisa and Jackson out on their deck! It was at about that time that the motion sickness kicked in for me and thus signaled an end to our first flight. And yeah, yeah, I looked at the horizon. Really, the only thing that helps is Feet on Solid Ground. And lots of ginger ale.
We had a really great time though and can't wait to do it again.

Warning:
The following post contains crass humour, vacant eyes, and photos of a graphic nature. Not suitable for all Blog Fans.
PC Catherine
Jason and I felt that it was necessary to document Maddie's beloved Catherine. As you may know, she has several babies, but for some reason, Catherine holds a very special place in Maddie's heart. She loves to hitch Catherine on her hip and carry her around, all the while fussing over her and "shushing" her. Maybe Catherine has colic?
Do you remember the Catherine story? Mom brought her to Maddie and originally Maddie named her Blue. But after much discussion (brainwashing?) Maddie and Grandma decided that Catherine would be a better choice. That first weekend Catherine had luxurious long brown hair (it fell off after about 48 hours). She also had lovely fake lashes (these lasted slightly longer than the hair). She arrived in a cute pink snow suit (this was the first to go). And now we are left with dear PC Catherine. Her hands and feet are attached to her cloth body with plastic zip ties (she came this way). In defense of Catherine (and Grandma) - the doll was never meant for a 2 year old. She was a display doll in a jewelry store. But Maddie needed a bigger baby for her high chair and Mom knows (as I do now) how bloody hard it is to find brunette babies. So Mom saw her and grabbed. Literally I think.
Anyway, the moment you've all been waiting for....
PC Catherine

One of our most favorite jammies for Maddie. We called these "Bag of Bones". She wore them when she was about 2 months old. Notice the diaper on the outside? Maddie put that on completely by herself. Honest.

And this picture illustrates her burr hole. And below that you will see her tattoo. I feel that this looks like a prison tattoo, but I'm not completely familiar with the symbols around prison tattoos. And Catherine isn't talking about her time spent Inside. Now, Are you ready for the next picture? Are you sure?
Really sure?

Really sure?
Yes, her head is falling off. Maddie has not seemed to notice. I'm not sure what to do. Tonight Jason and I talked about maybe asking Grandma Pollock if she could do surgery. Really, I'm not sure that the doll is worth it but MADDIE LOVES HER SO MUCH.
Oh Catherine. What will become of you?
September 2, 2009
Ok, I have to post this b/c it made me laugh out loud. When I put the blog to a book it doesn't seem to include the comments (even though they say it does). And I want this comment included...
"Poor Catharine, just when she thought she'd put all of the hard times behind her she was ripped from her life of leisure in the jewelry store and thrust into the hands of a toddler. Who knew it would be harder on the Outside? I guess this is an example of the hard choices one makes for true love (fully attached head v.s. love) I think we all know what side of the line PCC stands on." - Steph
