Homemade "Lunchables"

Your response:
a) Genius!
b) Jenn, you are officially the cheapest girl in Canada.

Discuss.

It's that time again, kids....

Random List Tuesday!

Patti "suggested" that I post on the blog. But I can't think of much to post about, other than the important mitten shout out. So...thought I'd give you sample of all the goodies floating in my brain at the moment:

1. I need to read a book for work and frankly, I don't want to do it.
2. My favorite sound is silence.
3. I listened to a new podcast tonight (thanks Em) The Moth. You never know what you're going to get. Sometimes it's funny and sometimes it's jaw dropping chilling.
4. I could sure go for some chips. Right. Now.
5. I love that feeling of being super tired and knowing all you have to do is go to bed. Know what I mean?
6. I want to take a creative writing class. But I'm not ready to give up a (sacred) weeknight to do it.
7. That's all I have. I need to read this damn book for work now. Sigh.

nighty night.

Thank you!

Grandma Pollock has been whipping up fingerless gloves for awhile now. Last year I gave a pair to one of the ladies who worked at the front desk at work and they were so popular I gave another two pair to the current Registration team. (it's chilly by that damn front door)

I have a pair and Maddie had been admiring them so Grandma suggested a pair just for Maddie. A bit smaller and of course a bit cuter. Not sure you can see them really well in the pictures. Maddie insisted that she should model them outside. However her photographer (me) was not super interested in going outside.

And do you see the matching scarf? This girl is nothing if not glamorous.

Once again, thank you Grandma Pollock!

born under a lucky star

On the drive home tonight Maddie announced she wanted to be an artist when she grows up. She says it is her destiny.

Maddie has kitty cat make up, if you couldn't tell. And in the other picture she is playing "piano lesson" with her dad (who, it was brought to my attention, does not appreciate being included in this blog. hmpf)

Treasure Hunters

We went to The Jewel for thanksgiving. Grandpa Kenco dug out his old metal detectors and we spent Sunday afternoon on a treasure hunt.

Started out at the McNutt ball diamonds but all we were finding was pull tabs and bottle caps (Budweiser. Reminded me of my Fridays on the Honey Farm). Went "downtown" and found a fabulous playground but still not much for treasure. Time for a new site.

The old Asessippi Town Site to be exact. So cool, check it out if you've never been (and you happen to be in the Parkland area...) Used to have several old buildings but they were replaced about ten years ago with informative (but not as fun) plaques. There is one building left - a boarding house. Oh how I wanted to get into that house. But they knew I was coming and boarded up each window/door to keep Nosey Parkers like me out.

Anyhoodle - we found TREASURE! So fun. I haven't yet taken a picture of our finds, but I'll do that and "catalogue" them on here. There's one picture of a keyhole - pretty neat. We also found a bullet from 1890's (yes we did).

Jason, Maddie, and I loved this so much I have a feeling this will be on our Christmas wish list...

And next time....Lisa I'm coming to the rink and kidnapping you. I know you could get some amazing images with this house.

I fail...but with good reason

ok, so I have this teeny tiny garden in the back yard.  It is literally 5 ft long and maybe 3 feet wide.  It basically looks like "that's where we put the body".

"Garden" is an awfully generous term.  It's actually some dirt, lovingly tilled by my father, briefly cared for by me (long enough to tuck some seeds in the ground) and then NEGLECTED.  What does this look like?  I'm not putting a picture up (I do have some pride) but it's pretty much 3 feet high weeds with 3 carrots and a teeny "lettuce bush" somewhere in the bottom.  It's horrible.  I haven't gone near it in 8 weeks.

So there's that.

Then there's the lawn - overgrown in some spots, bare and brown in others.  The front is brown as hell, while my Lawn Is King neighbors all have luxurious green (people, it is OCTOBER, let it GO)  Haven't watered it.  At. All.  This. Summer.

Then, (oh you thought I was done?) there is a front flower bed.  My pride and joy, crafted with tremendous help from my mom and dad (member when we went and pulled rocks to bring home and my Farm Boy Dad was horrified he was bringing rocks rather than getting rid of rocks).  Anyway, it has been beautiful in the past.  This year the damn lawn (despite lack of water and fertilizer) has crept over the rocks.  Grrr.

He doesn't come RIGHT OUT and say it, but I know my Dad is horrified.  When I grew up I actually wasn't allowed to mow the lawn.  That was a privilege I never quite earned (I'm serious - I did it once and was promptly fired).  My dad is that guy who owns an edger.  True story.  Growing up we always had a country garden AND another garden in our yard (which was 1/3 if not 1/2 of our back lawn)  My dad grew everything.  Amazing corn, cauliflower (you can grow that??) and beautiful gladiolas.

Apparently these skills are not strictly genetic.

So, I says to my dad, "Dad, the reason I can't garden is b/c I'm so busy.  I work".

To which he pointed out:  He worked, he coached T Ball (although that was brief b/c let's face it, the only thing harder for me then gardening is team sports), he was on 17 committees/boards/church groups.  Oh, and then he decided to further remind me that my mom also worked (full time), was on 17 17 committees/boards/church groups, and was a Brownie/Girl Guide Leader.  AND not only did they have a kick ass garden, they also canned basically EVERYTHING in it. They even made their own feather pillows one year after goose hunting was over.  (now that I think of it....my parents are the original Hipsters.  I think my mom even had the glasses)

Which makes me think: "Why can't I do that?"

Then it hit me.  The reason my parents could do it all:

They didn't have Pinterest.  Or Facebook.  Or Etsy.  Let's face it:  these people had Free Time.
